Mother of Invention: Romy Taormina of Psi Bands

Oops! Sheet Inc manufactures a line of waterproof cotton products that were created when a Mom needed products she could not find in the marketplace. In our Mother of Invention Blog Series we are profiling other Mom CEOs that invented products they needed for their children. This week’s CEO is Romy Taormina, co-founder of Psi Health Solutions, creator of natural solutions for nausea sufferers.

Who you are, what is your company and what does your company do
Romy Taormina, co-founder and Chief of Nausea Relief for Psi Health Solutions, the maker of Psi Bands – stylish acupressure wristbands for the relief of nausea.

What was your inspiration or Ah-hah moment that led to the creation of your Brand
I always knew I wanted to run my own business, but I had no idea that months of debilitating nausea would lead me there! I discovered the positive effects of using acupressure wrist bands to alleviate my nausea after experiencing terrible morning sickness during both of my pregnancies. Dissatisfied with existing products on the market that were drab and uncomfortable, I hatched the idea for Psi Bands, an FDA-cleared product that is both fashionable and functional for others who suffer from nausea due to morning sickness, motion sickness, chemotherapy and anesthesia.  The resulting patented Psi Bands come in six fun designs, and are uniquely drug-free, adjustable, waterproof, reusable and affordable.

Key personal back ground highlights (prior career, education, notable achievements)
Some of my career highlights have included being named: a 2012 Enterprising Women of the Year winner; a 2011 Huggies MomInspired Grant winner; a 2009 Trailblazer awardee from the National Association of Women’s Business Owners (NAWBO) and Wells Fargo; the 2009 Woman of the Year fromWoman2Woman Business magazine; a Martha Stewart Dreamer into Doer; and a Make Mine a Million $ Business awardee from Count Me In and American Express. I have a business degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. While there are several factors that have contributed to our success, one large factor has been our ability to create brand awareness AND demand for increased sales through our DIY (do it yourself) PR coupled with inexpensive yet targeted marketing techniques. If no one knows about you, they can not buy your product or hire you. Some of our PR highlights include features on Shark Tank, The Jeff Probst Show, Good Morning America, Oprah’s O Magazine, and Entrepreneur Magazine.  I love inspiring and educating other women entrepreneurs. One way I do so is through my blog, www.retailtable.com, that offers product-based entrepreneurs tips for how to get—and keep–their product on retail store shelves.

What the future for your Brand looks like, going forward
Five years after launching into the marketplace, Psi Bands are now sold at major U.S. retail locations, including CVS, Rite Aid, Babies “R” Us, Whole Foods, etc. We are just completing our rollout into all 7500 CVS/Pharmacy locations in the nation, which brings our total U.S. retail store count to more than 13,000 locations. Psi Bands are also sold internationally on five continents.  We also are releasing a new additional unisex design this month. It’s been a journey. From manufacturing to inventory management to cash flow management to marketing, I am always learning.
